EU Digital Product Passport

What is an EU Digital Product Passport and why does my brand need one?

The EU Digital Product Passport is a component of the EU's Circular Economy Action Plan. It provides a digital record of a product's lifecycle, including materials, production processes, and recycling information. Brands need it to ensure transparency, enhance sustainability, and comply with EU regulations.

When is it expected that the EU Digital Product Passport will become mandatory for the textile industry?

The exact date when the Digital Product Passport (DPP) will become mandatory for the textile industry depends on the specific regulations set by the European Union. However, it is expected to be fully mandatory by mid 2027, according to the plan from the EU Commission.

How will the EU Digital Product Passport requirement apply to textiles produced outside of Europe?

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is set to become an integral part of the textile industry's push towards sustainability and transparency. While it is true that a significant portion of textiles are produced outside of Europe, the EU plans to enforce the DPP for all products entering its market. This means that regardless of where a textile product is manufactured, if it is to be sold in the European Union, it must comply with the DPP initiative. This ensures that all textile products within the EU, whether produced locally or imported, meet the same sustainability and traceability standards, fostering a global shift towards more responsible production practices.

How can the use of the EU Digital Product Passport improve our sustainability metrics and reporting?

By adopting the DPP, brands can accurately track and report on sustainability metrics such as carbon footprint, recyclability, and material health, promoting transparency and informed consumer choices.

Who is affected by the Digital Product Passports?

All brands that sell textiles in the EU are subject to the ESPR regulations.

What will be the requirements of a Digital Product Passport?

The general requirements for digital product passports under the ESPR propose that:

  • All data in the Digital Product Passport (DPP) must use open standards, be machine-readable, structured, and searchable.
  • Each product should have a unique identifier linked through a data carrier.
  • This data carrier must be attached to the product itself, its packaging, or the accompanying documentation.
  • The information in the DPP should specify the product model, batch, or individual item.
  • The data carrier and the unique identifier must follow the ISO/IEC 15459:2015 standard.
